France Picks This Culinary Drama Over ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ For Oscars

The race to Oscars 2024 is getting more interesting by the day. Yesterday, it was revealed that the Indian Oscar committee had commenced the process of selecting India’s official entry for the Academy Awards 2024 and that films like ‘Zwigato’, ‘RARKPK’, and ‘Balagam’ were being considered. The final official announcement might be made sometime in the next week after a decision is made by the 17-member jury.

Besides India, other countries too are gearing up for Oscars 2024. And the list includes France, which is one of the most successful countries in the world with respect to the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category wins.

One of its award-winning films ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, a courtroom thriller, has already garnered global acclaim and was one of France’s strongest contenders to be submitted for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category at the Oscars. It was one of the five films which were shortlisted by France’s Oscars committee for the category.

However, in a rather surprising move, France has ignored ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ in favor of another film titled ‘The Taste of Things’ to represent the country in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ Oscar category.

As the name suggests, ‘The Taste of Things’ is a culinary drama, a period film set in the year 1885. The film revolves around the relationship between a reputed chef Dodin and his personal cook Eugenie (played by Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel). Their friendship soon takes the shape of romance, leading to some delicious dishes they make together. But after Eugenie shows disinterest in marrying Dodin, the latter decides to cook for her.

Now that France is going ahead with ‘The Taste of Things’ as the final film for ‘Best International Feature Film’ Oscar category, it won’t probably stop ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ from still competing at the Oscars. Just like ‘RRR’ campaigned for the Oscars despite not getting selected as India’s official Oscar entry, the stakeholders behind ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ will likely campaign their film in multiple categories. And who knows, it might even win the coveted trophy next year.
