zChurails, the hard-hitting Pakistani show that has been making waves on ZEE5 Zindagi, is back on the platform in Pakistan. For readers not in the know, the series had been yanked off ZEE5 for Pakistani viewers, after a social media storm over a contentious issue. ZEE5 had received a directive from Pakistan’s governing bodies to remove the show from Pakistan.
The issue with Churails began when Pakistan’s moral brigade went up in arms over a clip from the show that had gone viral on social media. It featured a female character in the show, called Sherry (played by veteran actress Hina Khawaja Hayat), stating that giving ‘hand jobs’ to her superiors was part of the route to reaching the position she was in. Pakistani netizens had slammed the clip, calling it vulgar and harming for Pakistani culture.
ZEE5 had then stopped streaming Churails in Pakistan, much to the dislike of the show’s writer-director Asim Abbasi, and liberal-minded netizens. But now, the matter is sorted and the show is back on ZEE5. More significantly, it is a win for Freedom of Expression, as well as for the streaming platform and the creators of the show.
Asim Abbasi proclaimed the return of Churails on ZEE5 in Pakistan with a tweet on his official Twitter handle that said, “The witches who wouldn’t burn, not for now, anyway. #Churails back on ZEE5 in Pakistan”.

Churails on ZEE5 has been appreciated the world over, for its unabashed and unconventional take on the oppression faced by women in third world countries such as Pakistan and India. It stars Sarwat Gilani, Nimra Bucha, Mehar Bano, and Yasra Rizvi.
