Netflix‘s new documentary puts football great Diego Maradona under the glare of audience scrutiny like never before. Titled Maradona in Mexico, the 7-part docuseries follows Maradona’s high jinks as he attempts to resurrect a lowly Mexican football team, languishing at the bottom of the league, and darn well succeeds at it.
Netflix’s description of the series goes — ‘In this docuseries, soccer great Diego Maradona comes to Culiacán, the heart of the Sinaloa Cartel, to save the local team, the Dorados, and maybe himself, too’, which perhaps is the best way to put it.
The series focuses on his attempt to redeem himself—after the 2018 World Cup fiasco—in a country notorious for its drug cartels. Every nuance of his is out on full display, no-holds-barred – his superb managerial and motivational skills, laced with his famous mercurial temperament, short temper and penchant for histrionics.
Yes, Diego Maradona is volatile, passionate—and supremely talented. “The Maradona revolution begins”, he announces with a flourish, upon arriving in Mexico.
