Freshly Arrived : The King on Netflix

Fans of Game of Thrones and larger-than-life medieval dramas of similar ilk have got something to look forward to. Netflix has just released the 2019 historical drama, The King, on its platform, and the blood, gore, suspense and thrills that occupy pride of place in the movie are right up the alley of action and drama junkies.

The King is based on several plays from William Shakespeare’s ‘Henriad’. Timothée Chalamet plays the titular character of King Henry V of England, while Joel Edgerton plays his friend and companion, Falstaff.

Robert Pattinson plays the son of King Charles VI, the King of France. He is called The Dauphin of France. Sean Harris portrays William Gascoigne, chief advisor and Chief Justice of the King of England. The flick also features Lily-Rose Depp as Catherine, daughter of the King of France, and Ben Mendelsohn as King Henry IV, father of Henry.

The King is directed by David Michôd and written by Michôd and Joel Edgerton. The movie won audience acclaim upon release due to its gripping performances, epic battle scenes and powerful imagery. The impressive production values make it a period drama worth watching.

The movie had been released only in select theatres in the USA in September 2019, and is now streaming worldwide on Netflix.

Siddartha Toleti: Perennially besotted with movies, I can’t imagine a day going by without watching one. Passion led to film reviews. The evolution has brought me on the digital platform. Alternatively, I love listening to music from the golden era of Hindi cinema, and Maestro Ilaiyaraja.
