In addition to differentiating Kahlo from other artists of her day, staying loyal to herself meant that each of her creations carried a piece of her spirit, which added to their specialness.

FRIDA may be her first experimentation with filmmaking, but it’s by no means her first work in the field; she was an editor on the documentary RBG. Gutiérrez received an Emmy nomination for her work on the Ruth Bader Ginsberg production that was nominated for an Oscar, which set her up for the ideal opportunity to devote more of her time to productions that highlight some of the most outstanding women in history. Putting all of her efforts into her Kahlo-focused movie, Gutiérrez spent two years collaborating with a wide range of artists and academics to make sure the film would honor the painter’s legacy.
