It seems that Disney and Lucasfilm have found a replacement for the late Ray Stevenson in Ahsoka Season 2, where he played Baylan Skoll. According to prominent scooper Jeff Sneider, the replacement comes in the form of Game of Thrones alumnus Rory McCann, who portrayed Sandor “The Hound” Clegane in the acclaimed HBO series. However, it is important to note that no official announcement has been made regarding this matter.
In addition to his memorable Game of Thrones role, McCann has appeared in major films such as Clash of the Titans, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Gladiator II.
Ray Stevenson tragically passed away in 2023. While there were initial plans to recast the role for Season 2, it remained uncertain who would take over. Moreover, the character proved to be far more intriguing and important than viewers had anticipated before the release of Season 1 (all credit to Stevenson). Creator Dave Filoni acknowledged the significance of Baylan’s story and emphasised that the recasting decision would be made with careful consideration.
Recasting Baylan Skoll makes sense, as he was one of the standout characters in Season 1. Benefiting from Stevenson’s outstanding performance, the character overshadowed all others in the show, even the white-lightsaber-wielding protagonist (Rosario Dawson) herself. This is why continuing his arc in the show is important. Additionally, his connection with his apprentice, Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno), was another intriguing aspect of the Disney+ series. Continuing Skoll’s arc would also support the development of Hati’s journey on the show.
McCann’s casting as Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka Season 2 is a unique and interesting choice. He is best known for his compelling and intense performances, whereas Skoll is a character defined by calmness and controlled rage. This contrast makes McCann’s portrayal an intriguing prospect. Moreover, McCann possesses the physicality and imposing presence to make him a visually striking and intimidating Skoll.
Stevenson delivered a powerful and memorable performance as Baylan Skoll in Season 1. Replacing him is a daunting task, and it remains to be seen if McCann can meet the high standard set by his predecessor.
Ahsoka Season 2 is expected to premiere in late 2025 or early 2026 on Disney+. In the meantime, you can watch the first season on Disney+ Hotstar. Stay tuned for more updates.
