‘Furiosa’ Aims For $85 Million+ Global Debut, Will It Become A Hit?

George Miller’s ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is all set to arrive in theatres. The prequel to Fury Road (2015) has already earned a spectacular response from critics at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Now, it is poised to dominate the global box office on its opening weekend.

As per Deadline, ‘Furiosa’ is expected to earn $80-85 million globally in its four-day-long opening weekend, with $40 million coming from Canada and the United States, and $40-45 million from abroad. The film will come out on May 23 in selected countries, including Australia, India, Germany, Italy, Korea, France, and all of Latin America. On Friday, it will be released in Canada, the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Beyond that, it will arrive in Japan on May 31 and China on June 7.

Furiosa’s theatrical run has a two-week window to maximize its box office potential before the arrival of the highly anticipated Bad Boys: Ride or Die on June 7, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Although, Furiosa may face tough competition from Chris Pratt’s The Garfield Movie, which has already minted $49 million from its foreign release. This animated Sony project is scheduled to premiere globally on May 24.

Fueled by its strong early positive critical reception, ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ may not only recoup its hefty $168 million budget but also become a box office hit during its theatrical run. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a ‘fresh’ 88% critic score, based on over 120 certified reviews. In addition, the global prominence of its leading duo, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, and their star power may contribute to the film’s success. However, a lot depends upon how The Garfield Movie performs. Stay tuned for more updates.
