A few hours ago, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the Game of Thrones novel series creator, George R.R. Martin will team up with playwright Duncan Macmillan (“1984”) and theater director Dominic Cooke to create a spin-off Game of Thrones theater project. The series will be based on the events of the infamous Great Tourney of Harrenhal which eventually lead to Robert’s Rebellion and “The Usurpur” taking the throne from the Targaryens.
This news comes out just days after Martin struck a five-year deal with HBO to create content for the network – the only known spin-off series titled ‘House of Dragon’. But unlike ‘House of Dragon’ which will be set 300 years before the events of the first season, this upcoming spin-off theater play will be set 16 years before the aforementioned events, hence many of our beloved characters from the main ‘Game of Thrones’ TV series will be appearing in the play.
The Great Tourney of Harrenhal was the first time Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen met, triggering a love story as tragic as ‘Helen of Troy’. We will also see a younger Ned Stark who was supposed to marry Ashara Dayne, the sister of Sir Arthur Dayne – The Sword of the Morning, as well as his older brother, Brandon Stark – “The Wild Wolf”. We will also get to see many other characters that we have only heard of such as Elia Martel, Aerys Targaryen (the Mad King himself), Lord Walter Whent, among many others. We will also see fan favourites Oberyn Martell, Eddard Stark, Jaime Lannister and possibly even Bran Stark (because he becomes a greenseer in the future).
Of course, no actor or character has been confirmed as of yet (the announcement is very recent), but since the Tourney of Harrenhal is mentioned numerous times in the book series (as well as the TV series), we expect all of the previously mentioned characters to turn up in this play. We just need to know if there will be any other additions in the Tourney, or if the play will go beyond the events of the jousting, archery and combat tournament and feature Robert’s Rebellion as well.
The Broadway play is expected to debut in New York, London, and Australia in 2023.
The HBO ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-off series ‘House of Dragons’ is expected to release next year, in 2022.
