We must have encountered hundreds of reports online about the possibility of seeing Westeros on the big screen. Well, that dream is officially becoming a reality. At CinemaCon, Warner Bros. confirmed that a Game of Thrones feature film is in development, and it’s tackling one of the most legendary stories in George R.R. Martin’s universe: Aegon’s Conquest.
The movie, titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, will take us back 300 years before the original series.
It tells the story of Aegon Targaryen, the man who first united the Seven Kingdoms. Alongside his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and his massive dragon Balerion the Black Dread, Aegon set out to conquer a divided continent and forged the iconic Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies.
The script is being written by Beau Willimon, the acclaimed creator of House of Cards and a writer for the hit Star Wars series Andor.
Known for his ability to write tense political drama and complex characters, Willimon seems like the perfect choice to balance the high-stakes diplomacy and brutal warfare of the Targaryen invasion.
While House of the Dragon and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continue to expand the franchise on HBO, this film marks a massive shift. By moving to theatres, the GOT universe can finally showcase the true scale of dragon warfare with a blockbuster budget.
For fans, this is more than just another prequel; it’s the origin story of the world we’ve spent a decade exploring. It is the moment the Targaryen dynasty began and the moment the Seven Kingdoms became one.
With a powerhouse writer and the backing of Warner Bros., Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest already looks like a massive win for the fans. Stay tuned for more updates.
