Gangubai Kathiawadi Album: A Breathe of Fresh Air In the Era of Remakes?

Gangubai Kathiawadi full music album was released yesterday. Composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, sung by the likes of Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh and Neeti Mohan the album oozes all retro, festive, Melody and classical vibes over the course of six songs. We are also introduced to two new exceptionally talented singers Archana Gore and Jahnvi Shrimankar.

Dholida, a cut out Bhansali-esque garbha song that reminds you of his ‘Nagada Sang Dhol’ and ‘ Nimbuda ‘ but with a twist has already clocked around 50 million views. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has seemingly subverted one of those Masala Movie Mass Hero Intro song tropes by placing Alia Bhatt‘s Gangubai making an entry to those dhol beats like a Mass HEROINE.

Jab Saiyaan, a beautiful and gleefully romantic Shreya Ghoshal number visualises Alia Bhatt and Shantanu Maheshwari’s gestural romance with aplomb getting us all in the right warm and fuzzy feels.

Neeti Mohan’s ‘ Meri Jaan ‘ sounds sensual, retro and jazz reminiscent of ‘Saawariya’ from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. A song that would take some time to grow on you but once it does there should be no turning back. ‘Shikayat’ and Arijit Singh‘s ‘Muskurahat’ lingers of pain and melancholy. You would wonder if they’re mirroring Ganga’s traumatic life before she became Gangubai along with the painful lives women of Kamathipura before her rise as The Madame of Kamathipura. Archana Gore’s strong vocals churn out a festive, celebratory mood in ‘ Jhume Re Gori ‘ making it yet another hard-to-ignore song from the album.

In short much like every other Sanjay Leela Bhansali musical, Gangubai Kathiawadi also flaunts of some solid compositions that would get us board the play-on-loop train in days to come.
