It was earlier reported that Netflix bagged streaming rights of Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Gangubai Kathiawadi. Although this Alia Bhatt starrer was reportedly scheduled to release on Netflix in the month of march, there are speculations about the Netflix release being pushed by a month since the film is doing exceptionally well at the theatres.
Directed and co-written by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is an autobiographical crime thriller movie starring Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz, and Indira Tiwari. The movie revolves around the inspiring story of a young woman Ganga Harjivandas who was forcefully sold to prostitution and then later spinned the course of her life by rising to prominence as the most powerful mafia queen of Kamathipura – Gangubai. She is still relevant for her brave advocacy of women’s rights and equal rights for sex workers at a time when they were looked down upon.
Gangubai Kathiawadi, premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival and was released in theatres on 25 February 2022. The screenplay is based on S Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai.Gangubai Kathiawadi will reportedly stream on Netflix in the last week of April according to sources. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next big project with Netflix is “Heeramandi” starring Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala and many other big names.
