Genre Defying ‘The Afterparty’ Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+

We have a new case to solve along with Detective Danner! Apple TV+ has announced renewal of the ‘The Afterparty’, the popular and refreshing murder mystery comedy created and directed by the award-winning Christopher Miller. The announcement comes ahead of the Season 1 finale which drops on Friday, March 4.
The Afterparty is a genre-defying series which involves a high school reunion’s afterparty that ends in a stunning death with everyone at the party a suspect. It is a comedy ‘whodunit’ with each episode of the show centred on each suspect explaining their version of the events of the night.

So, what is genre-defying in the show which sounds like a run-of-the-mill murder mystery? Well, each episode is showcased ‘through the lens of popular film genre and unique visuals to match the storyteller’s perspective.’ With 7 episodes released, the show has explored 7 unique genres as each suspect recounts the events – Romantic Comedy, Action, Musical, Psychological Thriller, Animation, Teen drama and Procedural crime drama.

The reception for the show until now has been positive. It is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 89% and has an IMDB rating of 7.2. Ahead of the finale fans are certainly excited as they will finally learn who was the murdered. But the excitement to discover what genre the show will explore in its final episode is higher. The first season of the show has an ensemble cast of comedy greats including Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, and Dave Franco.

What do we know about Season 2? Tiffany Haddish, playing the character of Detective Danner, returns for the second season as well. There is no confirmation on the remaining cast members and no details about the plot are released yet. However, with Detective Danner back, it could be another season involving a different crime case to be solved. It will be interesting to see if the creators continue the same concept of exploring new genres or come up with another out-of-the-box idea.

Season 1 of The Afterparty is exclusively streaming on Apple TV+.
