At the first feature competition of Jakarta World Cinema, an Indian film has won the award of Best Film. It is going quite great for Indian independent cinema and after Payal Kapadia’s big win at Cannes for her ‘All We Imagine As Light’, this news comes as a news to celebrate too. The film is titles ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ and it is a joint production of France and India just like ‘All We Imagine As Light’.
The film is directed by Shuchi Talati and stars actors like Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron. This is going on as a great year for Kani Kusruti who is having major roles in award winning projects in multiple languages.
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ has already been screened at some prestigious film festivals like the Sundance Film Festival, the Gothenburg Film Festival and it has been invited for the Busan Film Festival as well.
The movie tells the story of a teenage girl who experiences her first love in a hilly boarding school and has problems with her mother’s interference in her love life. The movie is inspired from the director’s own life and from Enid Blyton’s popular book series Malory Towers and St. Clare’s.
It is not known when the movie will be released in India.
