Gladiator 2’s set images and its humungous $250-310 million budget prove that director Ridley Scott has taken things to the next level. Now, the latest first-look images of the sequel released by Vanity Fair tease the epicness of the highly awaited sequel. One of the very first images released by the entertainment platform is the epic and bloody arena fight between Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.

“I call him Brick Wall Paul. He got so strong. I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again.”

Director Ridley Scott decided to pursue Paul Mescal for ‘Gladiator II’ after watching his performance in ‘Normal People’: “Watching a TV show that's not really my kind of TV show almost four years ago I said, ‘Who's this guy?’”

Paul Mescal takes a giant leap from his acclaimed role as the sensitive overachiever Connell Waldron in the romantic series “Normal People” to portraying Lucius Verus, the former heir to the Roman Empire in “Gladiator 2.” This marks a significant shift in the young actor’s already impressive career. Mescal’s character is the son of Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen in the first film (2000). Nielsen will reprise her role in the upcoming sequel, alongside Derek Jacobi, who returns as Roman Senator Gracchus.

On the other hand, viewers will witness Pascal as Marcus Acacius, a Roman general who trained under Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe in the original movie). Acacius did not appear in the first film. But his addition allowed the makers to strengthen the sequel’s connection with the 2000 movie. “This movie has an identity that is shaped by his legacy. It wouldn’t make sense for it not to,” said Pascal in his interview with Vanity Fair. The Fantastic Four actor hailed Acacius as a fighter who “learned from the best, so of course this code of honor is ingrained into his training and into his existence.”

Paul Mescal centered his ‘Gladiator II’ training on his fight choreography, rather than sculpting into an “underwear model”:

Denzel Washington is another new addition to Gladiator 2. The Academy-Award-winning actor takes on a supporting role in this film, a seemingly unconventional choice considering his frequent leading roles. He portrays a former slave-turned-rich merchant who harbors a grudge against the emperors, Caracalla (Joseph Quinn) and Geta (Fred Hechinger). Comparisons have already been drawn between Quinn’s portrayal of Caracalla and Joaquin Phoenix’s menacing Commodus from the first movie.
Gladiator 2 will come out in theatres worldwide on November 22, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
