Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 (which has the likes of Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and more) is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of 2024. Fans of the prequel (released in 2000) have high hopes for the upcoming sequel. Many publications have disclosed that the sequel’s budget has ballooned to $310 million, significantly more than its initially planned budget of $165 million. However, Paramount has stressed that the film’s budget is under $250 million. Still, this amount is substantial.
Many reasons have contributed to Gladiator 2’s insane budget. One is the Hollywood strikes, which added $10 million more to the budget. Another reason can be figured out from Pedro Pascal’s recent comments about the upcoming sequel.
Ridley Scott’s forthcoming directional will use minimal CGI and rely more on practical effects. Pascal has confirmed this. In the words of The Fantastic Four actor, Scott “leaves very little to the imagination in the most old-fashioned sense.” It means that Gladiator 2 is heading in the right creative direction.
The utilisation of CGI effects in Hollywood projects has increased significantly in the last few years. Big-budget projects usually have CGI effects nowadays. This revolutionary technology enables filmmakers to add stunning visuals and imaginary characters, creatures, and worlds into their projects. Apart from offering flexibility in storytelling, CGI technology also benefits the studios in terms of cost-effectiveness. However, over-dependency on CGI often raises complaints of lack of immersion or authenticity. Plus, CGI-generated visuals, sometimes, end up overshadowing emotional resonance or narrative depth. This is why, minimal CGI usage in Gladiator 2 is indeed a good sign.
One of the things that made Gladiator (2000) a humongous success was Ridley Scott’s preference for practical effects. They played an important role in giving the film an authentic and epic feel. It is not like the film was CGI-free. It just used CGI when needed, mainly to polish those scenes that were majorly achieved through practical effects.
But practical effects are not enough to save Gladiator 2. Given the $250-310 million budget and Ridley Scott’s recent track record, the upcoming sequel will need more than practical effects to ensure its survival at the box office. A strong positive critical reception would be a good start. Scott’s last two projects, House of Gucci and Napoleon, received a mediocre response from critics. This scenario adversely impacted their box office performances. On top of that, the craze for Ridley Scott’s films has diminished significantly in the last few years, as proved by The Last Duel, which bombed at the box office and earned barely $30.6 million against a $100 million budget. The Adam Driver and Matt Damon starrer failed to turn into a financial success despite earning acclaim from critics. This is where we should acknowledge the importance of fans’ love towards Gladiator (2000).
Gladiator 2 stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, May Calamawy, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and more. It will arrive in theatres worldwide on November 22, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
