The Greatest of All Times (GOAT), starring Vijay, was released yesterday worldwide in theatres and the film marked one of the highest opening day collections of the year. It surpassed the opening day collections of Raayan and Indian 2 to become the highest opening collection for a Tamil film this year. Though the film could not outshine the first day collection of Vijay’s last film Leo, it still became one of the highest openings of the year.
The film after its release, received quite a lot of criticism from the audience, and it seemed the film could not stand up to the hype it had created around. Still, people crowded the theatres to watch the film. Maybe, because the film had sentimental value for them, as this is one of the last projects of Vijay before retirement from Film Industry. The film collected a net amount of about 60 crores worldwide. Out of this amount 43 crores were accounted for in India and the rest are the overseas collections.
What is noteworthy is the film’s performance in the North American theatres. The film’s debut crossed the million-dollar mark in the North American screens. The first day collection in North America has been reported to be about 1.2 million dollars with the prediction to surpass the 5-million-dollar mark this weekend. It also crossed about a million-dollar mark in the UK. In North America with over a million-dollar business, the film stood at par with Deadpool and Wolverine, with similar occupancy to it in the theatres, including IMAX.
The film already had crossed the record for advance ticket bookings and now the opening for the movie too was filled with grandeur. Though the film shines on the box office, it is the critical review that has been disappointing for the film. Hopefully, despite facing such criticisms, the film still will be able to surpass its huge budget and generate a good amount of profit.
