The Godzilla universe is practically coming alive again, with some exciting updates coming up left, right, and center. The Oscar win of the Japanese Godzilla did give a boost, and on the American side of events, Godzilla and Kong are partnering up again to fight one of their biggest enemies ever.
But their fight won’t stop them from gifting a strong opening; it is destined to have the third biggest opening of the year.
According to reports, it will have a $45M debut, which definitely looks promising. With this strong start, the box office will reach the $2B mark for the entire franchise in no time.
Talking about the past of the franchise, Godzilla vs. Kong, directed by Wingard, had a $31.6M 3-day domestic debut in 2021, part of a $48.1M 5-day run. Despite its day-and-date release on HBO Max due to Covid, the film played a key role in revitalizing theaters after reopening in March 2021, grossing $470.1M worldwide, a record for day-and-date streaming releases.
Though the film will be releasing on March 29th, it is a period when Dune Part Two and Kung Fu Panda will cool off, and the market will be needing its next prodigal release. Godzilla vs. Kong will definitely fill that gap.
