The 81st Golden Globe Awards kicked off the 2024 awards season with gusto on Sunday evening, US time. While Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ won the most Globes as expected, Barbie’s no-show in the popular categories for films was a shocker.
Likewise, on the TV side, HBO’s Succession grabbed the most Golden Globes, but HBO’s other popular nominee, ‘The Last Of Us’, failed to get even a single Globe – a double shocker for sure.
Here are the salient and significant features of The Golden Globes 2024, in no particular order of importance –
1. Succession won the Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes this year. With this win, it has won the award three years in a row, achieving the record for most wins in the Best Drama Series category. It ties with The X-Files (1994, 1996, 1997) and Mad Men (2007-09) for the most wins for Best Drama at the Golden Globes.
2. Lily Gladstone won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Film for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. With this win, Lily Gladstone becomes the first Indigenous person to win an award at the Globes in all of its 81-year history. Two other Indigenous persons have been nominated earlier at the Globes – Taika Waititi (Best Director for Jojo Rabbit, Reservation Dogs), and Irene Bedard (Best Actress in a miniseries or TV movie for Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee), but both didn’t win the coveted award.
3. Netflix’s ‘Beef’ became the first show created by and starring Asian Americans to win a Golden Globe in its category.
4. The Boy And The Heron is the first non-English film to win Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes.
5. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became the first ever winner for the newly-instated award for Best Cinematic And Box Office Achievement.
6. Ricky Gervais became the first winner of the newly instated Award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy On Television, for Ricky Gervais: Armageddon on Netflix.
7. HBO’s The Last Of Us was the biggest snub at the Golden Globes 2024. The celebrated and popular show failed to pick up a single Award.
8. On the film side, Netflix and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, and The Colour Purple got the biggest snubs with zero awards.
9. Prime Video and Disney Plus were conspicuous with zero awards in any category.
