“Goodbye Earth” is a Netflix Original that blends South Korean flair with dystopian drama. Directed by Kim Jin-Min and written by the renowned screenwriter Jung Sung Joo, this series marks Sung Joo’s comeback to screenwriting after her last venture in 2015 with “Heard It Through the Grapevine.” Her repertoire includes hits like “Secret Love Affair,” “Roses and Bean Sprout,” and “A Wife’s Credentials,” promising a narrative depth that surpasses genres.
The series is based on Kōtarō Isaka’s novel, “The Fool At the End of the World.” Isaka’s works have been popular choices for adaptation, with the Brad Pitt film “Bullet Train” being another example. Netflix has also announced plans to adapt another Isaka novel, “Seesaw Monster,” with Anne Hathaway and Selma Hayek Pinault set to star.
Some Netflix subscribers may already be familiar with Ahn Eun Jin, who has previously graced the screen in notable roles. She portrayed Chu Min Ha in a supporting capacity in “Hospital Playlist” and took on a minor role as the wife of Moo Young, the personal guard of the Crown Prince, in both seasons of “Kingdom.”
Initially slated to star in the series, Yoo Ah-in participated in filming throughout production. However, reports surfaced indicating that he was subsequently edited out of the show during post-production. This controversial decision stemmed from his arrest on drug charges in March 2023. Despite this, Netflix continues to list the actor in the media centre for the show.
Yoo Ah-in celebrated his comeback to the small screen after four years with his role as Jung Jin Soo in “Hellbound.” His forthcoming project also ties him to Netflix, as he will act as Ha Yoon Sang in “Goodbye Earth.”
Jeon Sung Woo, well-known for his role in the Korean adaptation of “Designated Survivor,” is set to return to Netflix after nearly four years. In “Goodbye Earth,” he will play Priest Damiano, celebrating his first impression on the streaming platform since his last project.
Similarly, Kim Yoon Hye’s involvement with Netflix has been limited, with only one previous appearance in a Netflix Original. She played a supporting role in the widely acclaimed series “Vincenzo” as Seo Mi Ro. Now, she enters the cast of “Goodbye Earth,” extending her Netflix repertoire with another fascinating role.
So mark your calendar now! The series will debut worldwide on 26 April 2024. Season 1 will consist of 12 episodes.
