It’s time for Google Play Movies & TV to raise a white flag as Google decided to remove the app from Android TV forever. Google routinely discontinues applications with similar functionalities, as seen in the case of Google Play Music’s discontinuation in 2020. Google is all set to streamline the Android TV user interface by discontinuing Google Play Movies & TV this Wednesday. Despite the app officially ending on October 5, 2023, it will no longer be visible on Android TV after January 17.
But users, do not fret! This transition will not impact your accessibility of purchased or rented content. Users can switch to YouTube for their video content needs on Android TV. Content from Play Movies & TV has already been relocated to the Library tab for devices running Google TV. Users employing Android TV on a set-top box, rather than a smart TV, will find their content transferred to the YouTube app.
It’s worth noting that the ability to buy and rent movies and shows through YouTube is restricted to 46 countries, including the US, UK, Australia and Germany. For users unsure about the accessibility of their shows post-shutdown, accessing purchased content through the web is an option, as all purchases and rentals are tied to their Google account.
However, Google’s frequent closures of services like Google Duo and Pixel Pass in 2023, may prove frustrating for users, underscoring the extensive nature of Google’s service shutdowns. Hey, Google, play ‘Game Over’ tune for your dear old friend!
