Government Slaps Ban On 18 OTT Apps! Here’s The List

What seemed an extreme step yesterday has happened already. Needless to say, it was necessary but will it serve any purpose? Let’s try to find out.

The Indian government has cracked down on 18 online streaming platforms for streaming obscene and vulgar content. There were several warnings issued to them but these platforms continued to push boundaries and the line of decency.

The government’s action comes after a wave of complaints regarding the explicit nature of the content, which included nudity, explicit sexual acts, and inappropriate themes such as teacher-student relationships, familial misconduct and sometimes even incest.

What’s really sad about these apps is the reception it received from the audience. They are downloaded and used in great volume. We do realise that these apps are never in the headlines but they have a massive user base that streams it to temporarily tame their sexual urges.

However, the government also took more measures than merely banning these apps. The ban is also applicable on associated websites and social media accounts.

Now let’s come to the big question. Will this ban serve any purpose? We doubt it.

Porn is available for anyone and everyone with internet access. The two most popular apps for such kind of soft porn content are still not banned. But, even if this step acts as a message to other OTT platforms showing vulgar content then it would be a worth it decision.
