Filmmaker Greta Gerwig is still riding high after the critical and commercial success of her latest directorial venture ‘Barbie’, which has become a strong Oscar contender in major categories. The massive success of the film has made her a household name globally. So, fans from across the globe are now looking forward to her next project.
For the unversed, Greta Gerwig had collaborated with streaming giant Netflix to write and direct two movies based on C.S. Lewis’s ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ book series. This announcement happened even before Barbie’s theatrical release. And now, we have another update on that.
As per the latest update (via Collider), Greta Gerwig’s first ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ movie is expected to kick-off production at Netflix in the year 2024. An official confirmation is still awaited in this regard. The info was revealed by Netflix executive Scott Stuber.
‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ novel series was previously adapted for the screen in a feature film format into three movies namely ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘Prince Caspian’, and ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’, which came out in the years 2005, 2008, and 2010, respectively. This film franchise had grossed over a whopping $1.5 billion at the box office globally.
Later, Netflix acquired Narnia novels’ rights back in the year 2018. Now, it remains to be seen whether Netflix will completely reboot the film series, or the streamer has plans to make the second and third films in continuity with the first three movies.
‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ fantasy novels comprise a series of seven books which were published between 1950 to 1956. The underlying story in the books is set in the fictional world of Narnia and consists of several young protagonists, who are transported to Narnia in order to protect the place from evil forces.
