When a story is set in the northern hinterlands of India, more often than not, the Bollywood showcases them as tales of violence. Amidst such stereotyping here comes The Viral Factory (TVF) with its unique take on them through web series Gullak.
The trailer starts in the usual fashion, but it soon eases into the lovable TVF template of family dramas. The funny moments and dialogues give the vibe of an enjoyable fare in the making. The casting of the Mishra family looks perfectly imperfect, and so do the issues that separate each one of them and yet make them relatable to a broader set, universally.
However, the whole thing does give a template vibe as said above. Only the setting seems to be changed. It might not be a problem currently as that ‘template’ itself is the freshness, but repeating the same for a long time could hurt the prospects in the long term or recall value. Irrespective of the problem, Gullak, for now, is definitely on the must-watch list as TVF is making sure the emotional connect is felt.
Take a look at the trailer below. Gullak makes its online debut on June 27th. All the episodes stream on Sony Liv.
