After tackling scams and scammers in the stupendously success ‘Scam 1992’ on SonyLIV, director Hansal Mehta has moved on to another intriguing issue. This time, the master director will capture the havoc unleashed by the notorious Somalian pirates in the waters of the Indian Ocean. As is common knowledge, ships sailing on the pirate-infested Indian Ocean around East Africa do so with constant threat of being waylaid by pirates and getting hijacked. The pirates keep the crew in their custody until they are paid ransom. Several Indian ships have had to go through the torment in recent times, with the crew having no inkling of whether they’ll be rescued or left to languish at the mercy of the pirates. It is a subject never attempted before by anyone in the Indian entertainment industry.
Come to think of it, we’ve got very few shows or movies based on topics related to the high seas. Only ‘The Gazi Attack’ comes to mind from recent times. Hansal Mehta’s new show will definitely be pathbreaking content in Indian entertainment. The upcoming show has tentatively been titled ‘Pirates’. It plucks various events from real life to form an exciting premise. Shoot is already in progress in Cape Town. The show will premiere on Disney Plus Hotstar sometime around next year.
The plot centres on a large Indian commercial ship that is hijacked by Somalian pirates. The show will also shine a spotlight on the anguish that the loved ones of the crew go through back home. Most of the time, they have to run from pillar to post to secure freedom for their men out at sea.
‘Pirates’ has got in place an interesting cast. Vivek Gomber, Deepak Tijori, Rajat Kapoor, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Amruta Khanvilkar and Gaurav Paswala are some of the names associated with the project. Hansal Mehta is the the showrunner of the project, while son Jai Mehta is directing it. The screenplay is by Jai Mehta, Vishal Kapoor, Suparn Varma, and Vaibhav Vishal. Shaailesh R Singh’s Karma Media And Entertainment is producing it.
