As you guys all know, the highly anticipated MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) film, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘, dropped in theatres around the globe, barely a week ago. And not surprisingly, the film has done exceptionally well at the international box office. The film is now the fourth highest-grossing film of 2021, and if we weren’t in December, we are quite sure that this film would have taken the top spot in a couple of months. Still, something impossible seems to have happened – this Marvel-Disney collaboration is making a lot of money and it features not one, but two iconic memes.
The first iconic meme is an animated short with three Spider-men pointing at each other. In this recently released MCU Phase IV film, *SPOILER WARNING*, all three Spider-Men are seen pointing at each other as well. In fact, we see this happening twice in the movie, with many none the wiser.
The second meme was a highly popular meme at one point, which is a three-four second short gif from the very first Sam Raimi ‘Spider-Man’ film. This short video has Willem Dafoe’s character, Norman Osbourne, saying “You Know, I am something of a scientist myself”. Not only does this iconic meme get mentioned in the film, it is also uttered by the very same actor who first spoke them – Willem Dafoe himself.
And as you can imagine, Twitter has been going crazy for a few days now. Check out some of the Tweets below (The first two Tweets show us the original memes):
But no matter how awesome and crazy (and in some cases, mixed) the film version of the memes were, one fact still remains – Sony and Marvel really did the impossible and made money by capitalizing on memes. This is somehow funny and terrifying at the same time.
