Hindi cinema aka Bollywood is often criticised for producing cliched masala movies but we all know it isn’t limited to that and has also given us a number of gems that will be relished forever. But there are some such gems which do not fit a regular category and hence often go unnoticed.
One such underrated gem is the 2018 film ‘Kaalakaandi’, a black comedy drama written and directed by Akshat Verma, who was also the writer of ‘Delhi Belly’. The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Oberoi, Deepak Dobriyal, Vijay Raaz, Isha Talwar and Sobhita Dhulipala.
‘Kaalakaandi’ follows Rileen (Khan), a teetotaller, who learns that he is suffering from stomach cancer and has a month left to live. He decides to live life to the fullest by trying hard drugs. There are multiple other side tracks that add up to the chaos.
‘Kaalakaandi’ is a kind of film that won’t feel dull to you at any given point. Justifying its name that means “when things go disastrously wrong”, chaos and twists just keep coming one after the other in this highly underrated dark, hilarious and crazy film.
Saif is an absolute hoot in ‘Kaalakaandi’ which surprisingly is outrageously humorous yet utterly sensitive at the same time. Also, this film is not everyone’s cup of tea, but it will definitely impress those looking for an edgy, off-beat Bollywood experience. ‘Kaalakaandi’ is currently streaming on Jio Hotstar and is surely worth a try.
