HBO’s Parasite Series: Bong Joon-ho Shares A Major Update

HBO’s Parasite TV series has finally received a strong update from prominent director Bong Joon-ho, who helmed the Oscar-winning 2019 original film.

The television network officially announced a TV series based on the original film following its record-breaking success, which was reflected in a worldwide gross of over $258 million and four Oscar wins at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Just when everyone had nearly forgotten about the series, Joon-ho delivered a hopeful update about the project. It is important to note that there has been no word on the project’s status since 2023. At that time, Francesca Orsi, an HBO executive, revealed that the series was in the early stages of development.

In a recent interview with a Deadline reporter at the premiere of his upcoming film Mickey 17 (starring Robert Pattinson), Bong confirmed that the Parasite TV series is still in development, adding that the writers are working hard on the project.

However, he also disclosed that fans might have to wait longer than anticipated to see the finished product. This is what Joon-ho said:

“The writers are working very hard on it, they’re fiercely writing. I think the writing room of that show itself can be another TV show. Just wait a bit longer, it’s gonna take a while.”

Parasite (2019) follows the poor Kim family, who cunningly infiltrate the wealthy Park household, with each member assuming a vital role as a seemingly unrelated, highly skilled employee. Their elaborate scheme unfolds seamlessly—until a shocking discovery reveals a hidden secret within the Parks’ home, putting in danger their carefully constructed plan and escalating into a chaotic and ultimately tragic confrontation.

Parasite is a masterful blend of genres, seamlessly shifting from comedy to thriller to tragedy. Its sharp social commentary on class disparity resonates deeply, while its clever plot twists and exceptional performances keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

This Bong Joon-ho project went on to win Oscars for Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards. Stay tuned for more updates.
