We have always been intrigued and interested in the world of cinema and we have always wanted to know more about them. Many of the films are based on films or the world of films itself and the genre of ‘Cinema Inside Cinema’ is a very interesting take on the craft of filmmaking. Here is a short list of five films that somehow revolve around films, filmmakers or actors.
Kagaz Ke Phool (1959) – Amazon Prime Video & JioTV:
The visionary filmmaker and actor Guru Dutt’s magnum opus ‘Kagaz Ke Phool’ is the love story between a divorced director and a young actress. The film deals with the dilemmas of a filmmaker and how the world of cinema affects his personal life and vice versa. This was the most personal film Dutt ever made, but it was trashed by critics at the time of its release. It later gained huge fame after the death of him. It has some wonderful performances from Waheeda Rehman, John Walker and other actors too.
Filmistan (2012) – Disney+Hotstar:
‘Filmistan’ is directed by Nitin Kakkar and stars actors like Sharib Hashmi, Inaamulhaq, Kumud Mishra and Gopal Dutt. The tells the story of Sunny, who is an assistant director in Mumbai. Sunny wants to be a superstar and he starts working with a American team in a film. When he thinks that he is closer to becoming a superstar now, life suddenly turns up with another twist. He mistakenly gets kidnapped by terrorists and now has to escape and find his way back.
Shobdo (2012)- Youtube:
‘Shobdo’ or ‘Sound’ is the story of a foley artist Tarak who works for the Bengali film industry and he begins to perceive sound in a very sharp and different way. He begins to listen to what ordinary human beings cannot and this drives him to so-called madness. This one of the most aesthetic movies ever made in India and it will give you the glimpses of what it takes to be an artist and how the superstardom of actors and directors overshadow the toil of artists and other people involved in the film industry.
The Dirty Picture (2011) – Disney+Hotstar:
‘The Dirty Picture’ is the story of actress Silk Smitha who was known for her bold acting in South Indian movies. Vidya Balan plays Silk and various talented actors like Nasruddin Shah, Emran Hashmi play different characters. The Dirty Picture is directed by Milan Luthria and explores the dark side of the film industry as well as the eroticism in cinemas.
Luck By Chance (2009) – Netflix:
‘Luck By Chance’ is directed by Zoya Akhtar and stars Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Hrithik Roshan and has many more stars making effortless cameos in the movie. It tells the story of an aspiring actor who wants a break in Bollywood and is supported by his girlfriend but when he finally becomes an actor he gets involved in an outside affair and soon forgets his supportive and well wishing girlfriend. It is one of the most insightful movies that are based on cinema itself.
