Aparna Sen is one of the leading female directors in contemporary Indian cinema and if you have not discovered her filmography yet now is a very good time. Her films like ‘Mr. & Mrs. Iyer’, ‘The Japanese Wife’, ‘Antaheen’ have impressed audiences throughout the years. And today we come with a recommendation of a film that you should not miss at any cost.
‘Goynar Baksho’ came out in 2013 and is a hilarious tale of a ghost who does not want to leave her box of jewelleries. Mousumi Chatterjee plays the role of Rashmoni, a woman who had been widowed in childhood and had to come to India from East Pakistan during the partition. She went on to be the matriarch of the family and when she dies, her ghost makes sure that her jewellery box is taken care of by her niece-in-law. Somlata, the niece-in-law tries to bring many changes in the customs of the family and convinces her husband into starting a business to save the home from ruining in poverty. When she gives birth to a child after a long time, the baby becomes everybody’s beloved. Aparna Sen goes on with a mesmerizing tale through many years and multiple events occur in between that change the course of the plot.
The performances in the movie are beautiful. The Director’s own daughter Konkona Sen Sharma acted in the movie, like many of her other movies. Other actors include Saswata Chatterjee, Koushik Sen, Paran Bandyopadhyay, Srabanti Chatterjee, Mousumi Chatterjee and more.
The story is written by popular Bengali writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. The music is something that you will want to return to again and again after watching the movie. The music is composed by Debojyoti Mishra and the vocals are given by Subha Mudgal, Koushik Chakroborty and more.
