Do you like deep intellectual movies that need high observation and understanding to enjoy it? Here is a recommendation for you.
‘Ship Of Theseus‘ is an independent film written and directed by filmmaker Anand Gandhi and released in 2013. There were many issues regarding the production and release for the film but finally Kiran Rao stepped in as the distributor and Ship Of Theseus hit the theaters. It did not do that much of a business at that time but grew to the status of a classic to very select audiences. The film is now available on YouTube.
With a common theme of organ donation, the film is an anthology of three parallel stories. One tells the story of a young businessman whose values do not match with his hospitalized grandmother. One is of a monk who is fighting for animal rights and does not want to take medicines when diseased as the medicines are made from animals. One part of the film tells the story of a blind girl who is a photographer but when she gets eyes from a dead donor, she does not clearly feel the passion for photography.
All these stories are intertwined together in a wonderful way and they basically ask the same question. Is the whole bigger than the sum of the parts? ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ paradox is a deep question that deals with the identity of human beings. If you are fascinated by philosophy, this movie is a must watch for you.
As it is made on a very low budget, many creative ideas are incorporated into it. The cinematography is wonderful and it has no background music. You can watch the film for free on YouTube.
