Diehard fans of Keigo Higashino’s 2005 Japanese crime mystery novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’ should be in for a treat as its on-screen Indian adaptation ‘Jaane Jaan’ is all set to start streaming on the Netflix OTT platform from tomorrow. Adapting a critically acclaimed and highly popular book for the screen has invariably been a double-edged sword for filmmakers across the globe and ‘Jaane Jaan’ is no exception. So, that’s one potentially worrying factor for Sujoy Ghosh’s upcoming Netflix film.
At the outset, we must admit that the trailer for ‘Jaane Jaan’, which has been helmed by the gifted ‘Kahaani’ director Sujoy Ghosh, was quite well received by film buffs. The trailer has set high hopes for the film. But with high hope comes higher expectations. Besides, there is another thing about ‘Jaane Jaan’ which could go against the film and that is Kareena Kapoor Khan’s casting.
It’s a fact that Kareena Kapoor Khan has won several popular awards besides delivering some acclaimed performances in the past in films like ‘Jab We met’, ‘Chameli’, and ‘Udta Punjab’. On the other hand, a segment of viewers have opined that she has also overacted in some films such as ‘Ra.One’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ and ‘Bodyguard’.
Moreover, many viewers thought that her casting in Reema Kagti’s ‘Talaash’ was the cause of premature mystery revelation even before the film’s climax where the suspense was actually revealed. It wasn’t her performance mainly but her casting for such a vital role in ‘Talaash’ which was the problem. And since ‘Jaane Jaan’ also belongs to the mystery thriller genre, we are somewhat apprehensive about Kareena Kapoor Khan’s casting here as well. Her casting alongside the two terrific actors Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma might be viewed by some viewers as a casting mismatch.
On the positive side, from the film’s trailer, so far it looks like Kareena Kapoor Khan has adeptly underplayed her performance, the way it should be for a film like ‘Jaane Jaan’ – subtle and natural. But a trailer is a trailer. So, let’s see if it stays the same way throughout the whole film. We are hopeful that the actress will spring a pleasant surprise and prove us wrong. Verdict will be out soon.
