Co-written and helmed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie will come to streaming this year. However, fans will have to wait long to watch the latest Margot Robbie starrer on their screens. Giving birth to the ongoing Barbenheimer phenomenon on social media, Barbie has collected over $810 million globally and will likely end its historic box office run with a total collection of around $1.3-1.6 billion.
In his recent interview with The Wrap, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav discussed Barbie’s streaming release. He did not give an official date, as he disclosed that the film would receive a conventional theatrical release window. It means that the film will remain in theatres as long as possible before its streaming release on Max.
This is what Zaslav said:
“We really believe in the motion picture window. Let this movie go to the motion picture window, play it up, build up that brand, then have it go into PVOD. Take it through these windows of economics that have worked forever, and we think work extremely well. And then put it on Max. And when it goes on Max, we think it’ll have a very good impact and that’ll be in the Fall.”
A fall release window indicates that Barbie may arrive on Max in late 2023, possibly around October-November. And we know that Jio Cinema is now the streaming home for all Max, HBO and Warner Bros content. So, Indian viewers should expect to get Barbie on JioCinema during the above-mentioned period.
Barbie has become one of the most profitable theatrical releases for Warner Bros this year. It makes sense why the studio has pushed back the film’s streaming release as this scenario enables the film to earn as much money as it can through theatres. Stay tuned for more updates.
