Here’s Why Alex Garland’s Civil War Is A Gamechanger For A24

Alex Garland’s next directional feature, Civil War, may change the game for A24. The film studio is largely known for its indie and creative projects. Civil War will mark its first-ever venture into the mid-budget marketplace and the territory of action blockbusters. It is A24’s most expensive movie, with a budget of $75 million. This record currently belongs to Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid, which had a $35 million budget.

Not much is known about Civil War’s plot, except it is set in a dystopian United States where the regular conflicts between the country’s government and partisan extremist militias have made the lives of people a living hell. Kirsten Dunst plays a reporter in the film, and Nick Offerman portrays the ruthless President of the United States. Apart from these two talents, the remaining cast comprises Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, Karl Glusman, and more.

Civil War’s latest trailer showed California and Texas working together. In reality, these two US states are considered polar opposites regarding political views. It means that a drastic or horrifying event takes place in the film, forcing these two prideful states to collaborate. Another thing that stands out in the film is Jesse Plemons’ cold and psychotic character as a soldier. He is a scene-stealer. And he will also steal the limelight from other actors in the upcoming Alex Garland directional. Though, we do not know if he has a full-fledged role or a cameo appearance in the film. It is possible that he was included in the trailer for marketing purposes and to attract viewers’ attention.

Nick Offerman is another highlight of Garland’s Civil War. In addition to his comic roles (Parks and Recreation), the actor is also known to exhibit dramatic chops, thanks to HBO’s The Last of Us series. Now, we will see him playing a tyrannical political figure with all the power in his hands. It will be interesting to see how Offerman plays this part.

There is no denying that Civil War is a huge risk from A24, considering the studio’s poor record with big-budget projects. But we also cannot ignore the film’s intriguing premise. Let’s see how A24 manages this situation. The fourth Alex Garland directional will come out on April 26, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
