Here’s Why Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer Needed An ‘R’ Rating

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has received an ‘R’ rating from the MPA. It is the first film in the helmer’s 20-year legendary feature directional career that has received such a rating. Film studios often try to stay away from the Rated-R format as it reduces the number of theatres and audiences. Although, this format has worked exceptionally well for many movies, such as the John Wick franchise, the Deadpool series, and more.

Oppenheimer will undoubtedly be different from Nolan’s previous works. The Dark Knight Trilogy bestowed a realistic and hard-hitting portrayal of Batman. On the other hand, masterpieces like Inception and Interstellar treasured mind-bending and out-of-this-world stories about dreams and space. This time, viewers will get a war biopic in the form of Oppenheimer, based on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who created the atomic bomb. And this one needs an ‘R’ rating, considering Oppenheimer’s complicated persona and the film’s subject material.

The upcoming Cillian Murphy starrer will be Nolan’s second war project after Dunkirk (2017). It depicted the historic Dunkirk evacuation of World War II from the perspectives of the air, sea, and land. This one could have delivered a more immersive watching experience to viewers if it had an ‘R’ rating. Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the best examples of flicks that have benefitted immensely from the ‘R’ rating. The film did a better job of showcasing the true horrors of the war compared to Dunkirk.

In addition, Oppenheimer’s personal life was a mess. After the US bombed Nagasaki, the theoretical physicist urged President Truman to ban all nuclear weapons. The guilt of this scenario forced him to proclaim himself as the “destroyer of worlds”. There was no way Nolan could have captured Oppenheimer’s life without the ‘R’ rating.

Helmed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer will arrive in theatres worldwide on July 21. It stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, and more. Stay tuned for more updates.
