Here’s Why James Gunn Should Make Suicide Squad 3

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) served as a standalone sequel to David Ayer’s original 2016 Suicide Squad film. Both critics and audience butchered the latter project due to its messy plot, Ayer’s choppy direction, and poorly written characters. Several reports have revealed that Ayer’s film was altered by Warner Bros after receiving a highly divisive reaction to Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). As a result, DC fans have pushed the studio to release Ayer’s original cut of “Suicide Squad”. They did the same with Snyder’s Cut of Justice League after learning about its existence from the director himself.

Rumours about Ayer returning to helm Suicide Squad 3 have gained significant attention on social media. However, Gunn has debunked the possibility of the sequel in a recent interview with Michael Rosenbaum (Inside of You).

In his recent interview, Gunn discussed Peacemaker Season 2 and the upcoming Amanda Waller series. When asked about the possibility of Suicide Squad 3, the director firmly replied, “No”.

Superman: Legacy has Gunn’s entire focus. The helmer is looking to start the DCU on a high note with the upcoming David Corenswet starrer. Plus, he has great plans for Peacemaker Season 2. Given his tightly packed schedule, the odds of Suicide Squad 3 seeing the light of day are almost negligible.

Suicide Squad 3 needs to happen. The last SS instalment proved that DC’s ragtag group of superheroes has plenty to offer to the fans. Gunn brilliantly used the “Rated-R” category and delivered a bloody but enjoyable superhero flick.

The characters that deserve attention this time are Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior). Robert Dubois, aka Bloodsport, is one of the best characters in The Suicide Squad. His sarcastic personality, fear of rats, deadly assassin skills, and complex relationship with his daughter made him an intriguing character to watch. Then we have Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2, who added the much-needed compassionate and emotional element to the film, something which was badly missed in Ayer’s version.

Elba has also expressed his desire to return as Bloodsport in a future DC project. “I love Bloodsport. I have no idea what they want to do with it. I imagine that the next time we see Bloodsport would probably be in a [Suicide Squad] movie,” Elba said. “I don’t think they have any plans to give him his own franchise, but there’s a possibility.”

We do not know when we will get Suicide Squad 3. But we do know that Superman: Legacy will come out in theatres worldwide on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
