Here’s Why We Need More Films Like Netflix’s Kaali Khuhi!

By Binged Bureau - Oct 09, 2020 @ 10:10 pm

Kaali khuhi on Netflix is a means to potray something that isn’t discussed much in usual discourse – the brutal social practice of female infanticide. Films are a form of art and when art is utilised in a manner such that it acts as a mirror to reflect what’s wrong in our society, it is then that it truly serves it purpose.

This does not in any way mean that art cannot be a means of just entertainment once in a while but that shouldn’t become the only aim of it. Highlighting certain pressing issues of the society in a way that it also engages the audience is also a form of recreation and Netflix’s latest horror film “Kaali Khuhi” tries to pull up exactly something like that.

Kaali Khuhi is set in a village in Punjab which has had a history of female infanticide and has now become the scene of mysterious deaths of its inhabitants. A 10 year old girl, Shivangi (Riva Arora) starts to see some very disturbing things and she is the one who can save her family from the restless ghosts of the village’s horrific past.

As seem from the teaser, all of it looks horrifying and chilling to the core. The way a baby is dropped in the well in the beginning to the scene of a funeral and the background music makes it all very spooky and creepy.

So now you know that the movie has all the ingredients of the horror genre but the message it conveys is the most important. Kaali Khuhi in a way says that killing of a female child deliberately is nothing less than a horrific criminal act that is wrong in every thinkable sense possible.

Indian film industry has produced many outstanding works that have shone light on various social issues like Masaan, Pink, OMG (Oh My God), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Aligarh, Udaan, Parched, Hindi Medium and many more. All these movies have used various genres to highlight the issues in the best way possible. And now Kaali Khuhi on Netflix is on the way to join the list of these incredible works of art.

Kaali Khuhi has been directed by Terrie Samundra and stars legendary actor Shabana Azmi, Riva Arora, Satyadeep Mishra, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Leela Sampson in the lead roles. The Netflix film has been produced by Ramon Chibb and Anku Pande.

Kaali Khuhi will premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 30, 2020.
