This Jonathan Levine written and directed film is based on American writer Isaac Marion’s novel of the same name, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The movie has a stellar cast with Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Analeigh Tipton, Rob Corddry and John Malkovich in prominent roles and Dave Franco in a short, cameo role.
In 2013, when a one-of-a-kind zombie apocalypse film, ‘Warm Bodies’ dropped in theaters, it didn’t make much noise, but scored big in the box office – making more than three times the film’s initial cost. These numbers made the movie a silent hit and it left as soon as it had come. This movie however, was genre defining (still is a genre defining movie) and doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
The movie starts from the point of view of R, a zombie. He can communicate with his best friend, M, another zombie through grunts, moans, snorts and some occasional words. When R and a pack of zombies hunt for food, they encounter a scavenger party headed by Julie Grigio. After eating the brain of Julie’s boyfriend, Perry, Perry’s feelings for her reciprocated within R and he decides to protect her from the other zombies. As R begins to start feeling something new, something other than the constant hunger, Julie notices that R is slowly starting to revert back to a human being.
As the above synopsis shows, this is a very different zombie apocalypse story and that makes this movie interesting. Nicholas Hoult is brilliant, while Analeigh Tipton provides some epic comedic relief moments. Now this movie isn’t as brilliant as the other films from the “Hidden Gems” list, but it is still unique enough to be on here.
