Hidden Gems: BBC’s ‘Bodyguard’ Is A Political Thriller Like No Other

For this week’s “Hidden Gem”, we decided to take a look at one of the more recently released British TV series – 2018-released, BBC One’s ‘Bodyguard‘. This political action thriller web series was known for its brilliant portrayal of the various controversies that surround a ruling government, such as monitoring of private information and its regulation. The TV series also gives us a more in-depth look at soldiers who suffer from PTSD. There have only been 6 episodes (1 season) out of at and they are all available for streaming on Netflix.

This brilliant TV series is revolved around two main characters – An extremely ambitious home secretary, the Rt Hon Julia Montague MP and her bodyguard, War Veteran David Budd. Although Budd is in charge of the safety of MP Montague, he disagrees with her latest political policies and agendas. While also dealing with her very off-putting personality, he also has to tackle his psychological scars in the form of PTSD, which he gained during his time in Afghanistan as a soldier.

A look at how subtle politics works while at the same time showing how policies are put forth in the UK, this action series manages to put in enough political lingo and understanding to make it a good political show as well. While the show mainly is about the interaction of two very different people, the series shows that one must put aside their differences when their calling comes knocking.

‘Games of Thrones’s’ Richard Madden and ‘Spooks’s’ Keeley Hawes are two leads of this action political TV series. Developed and written by Jed Mercurio, ‘Bodyguard’ is produced by World Productions as part of ITV Studios for the BBC. Richard Madden has spoken out about a possible second season coming out in the near future, but there hasn’t been official confirmation regarding that yet.

As mentioned previously, the 6 episodes of season 1 of ‘Bodyguard’ is currently streaming on Netflix.
