We are starting a new series called “Hidden Gem”, where we write an article on a show or a movie that is relatively unknown to the mainstream audience. We will be dipping into multiple platforms (while sticking mainly with major OTT streaming services) to find these relatively unknown flicks and we will be scouring through International, Bollywood and regional content to give you some shows you should be watching (or at the very least, give it a go). And the very first show we suggest is titled ‘3%’.
Created by Netflix, the series is the streaming service’s second non-English production, their first Portuguese-language original series and it’s first Brazilian original television series. The series is a Brazilian dystopian thriller created by Pedro Aguilera, which features João Miguel and Bianca Comparato in starring roles. The series premiered on 25th November 2016 and released its fourth and final season on August 14th of this year, completing the dystopian thriller in 33 episodes (run time varied heavily from 36 – 74 minutes).
The series is set in Brazil (Rio De Janeiro according to the map in the series, but it is not mentioned), in an unspecified future which is well ahead from the current times (the date is not mentioned, nor is it important for the story). There are two regions of importance in the series – The “Inland” and the “Offshore”. The Inland is an impoverished land, where most of the “world’s” population is living under anarchy while the Offshore is a literal offshore society (an island), where there is plenty of food and resources, and technology that can take care of every human need and can cure any disease.
Every year, the “Process” takes place, which allows 20 year olds of the Inland to compete in a series of tests which will determine their “merit” and on passing them they are allowed to go “Offshore” for a “better” lifestyle. The test weeds out the “unworthy” and allows only 3% to pass the test. We jump into the 104th test of the Process, which is where the first season begins. The show follows a group of candidates going through these tests while at the same time seeing the political unrest happening within both areas.
‘3%’ is currently streaming on Netflix.
