Back in 2015, an up-and-coming filmmaker wrote and directed his first feature length film – ‘Krisha’. The filmmaker’s name is Trey Edward Schults and it was adapted from the 2014 short film of the same name, which was also directed by Shults. The USD 30,000 budget went on to make nearly five times that in its limited release in 2016, by A24 and the movie went on to receive the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award in the narrative feature competition at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival.
The movie follows a troubled woman in her sixties, Krisha, who is coming home to her estranged family on Thanksgiving. The woman, who was a former addict, gets a mixed response from her family members, when she meets them after so many years. Her sister, Robyn, welcomes her back with open arms and helps Krisha prepare a massive Thanksgiving dinner for the family, while her Krisha’s son Trey is cold and unforgiving. As the day passes, Krisha is met with situations that slowly attempt to tempt her back to her previous lifestyle – making this dinner, a true recipe for disaster.
Trey Edward Schults cast his real-life aunt, Krisha Fairchild in the titular role. Most of the film’s primary cast also featured Schults’ relatives including his mother, grandmother, and his actor friends. The film was shot in nine days and was made in Shults parents’ house. This internationally premiered film went onto screen in the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. ‘Krisha’ was well received by audiences and critics alike, but the film didn’t make it as big as it could have been.
‘Krisha’ is can be bought and streamed on iTunes. Check out the film’s trailer down below:
