Welcome back to Hidden Gems. This week we will be looking at yet another Netflix streaming International feature film, ‘Quién te cantará’. This Spanish film premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and went on to get rave reviews from critics and attendees alike. Spanish filmmaker Carlos Vermut wrote and directed this 2018 released film and it is now currently available for streaming on Netflix.
So what is ‘Quién te cantará’ all about? Well, the film follows Lila Cassen, a famous Spanish singer who hasn’t sung a song in over a decade. She decides to perform again and organizes a tour around the country. However, Lila almost drowns and falls into a coma for a short time period. When she wakes up, she forgets all about herself and her ability to sing. Left with no choice, her managers recruit Violeta, who is a karaoke singer known for imitating Lila. Violeta, who is also a Lila superfan, helps Lila to remember herself while helping her sing again.
If the storyline feels a little familiar, that is because it has a few similar elements from the 2010 biopic, ‘The King’s Speech’. In that film, however, King George VI cannot speak without stammering. Bigger the occasion, the more stressed he feels, the more he stammers. But because he is a king who is part of a nation that is about to go to war, he has to address the nation. With the help of his speech therapist, Lionel Logue, he attempts to pull off the impossible – make an important speech to the nation without stammering. Similar to this film, ‘Quién te cantará’ will mainly focus on the dynamic relationship between Lila and Violeta.
‘Quién te cantará’ features Najwa Nimri, Eva Llorach, Carme Elías and Natalia de Molina in prominent roles. If you are wondering why Najwa Nizri looks familiar, it is because she plays Inspector Alicia Sierra in the Netflix web series phenomenon – ‘Money Heist’.
