Highest Grossing Indian Movies of 2022 & Where to Stream on OTT

The Indian film industry in the year 2022 was blessed with some terrific blockbusters like S.S. Rajamouli’s period actioner ‘RRR’ and Prashant Neel’s massively popular ‘KGF-2’. On the other hand, there were also some films, such as ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Kantara’, which turned out to be unexpected box-office money spinners and surprised everyone with their performance.

10. Beast (Streaming on Netflix)

The action-comedy movie follows a former RAW agent Veera Raghavan (played by Vijay), who finds himself in the midst of a terrorist hijacking situation while trapped inside a shopping mall in Chennai. He makes it his mission to use his skills to foil the hijacking attempt and rescue the hostages while dealing with his own past demons.

9. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (Streaming on Netflix)

Directed by Anees Bazmee, the comedy-horror flick is a standalone sequel to Priyadarshan’s 2007 film starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan. The sequel features Kartik Aaryan as Ruhan, who meets a woman named Reet during a trip. Their chance encounter leads them to a haunted mansion in Rajasthan following which Ruhan poses as a psychic, leading to an interesting turn of events.

8. Drishyam 2 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video – Rent)

Helmed by Abhishek Pathak, ‘Drishyam 2’ takes place around seven years after the incredible events of the first film. The basic plot revolves around Vijay Salgaonkar’s (Ajay Devgn) family, who is still living under the fear of the impending consequences of the police investigation for the senior cop’s (Tabu) missing son. When the investigation comes back again to haunt his family and with a new cop (Akshaye Khanna) on his trail, the protagonist tries to deal with the situation with his sharp intellect to protect his family once again.

7. The Kashmir Files (Streaming on Zee5)

Written and directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, ‘The Kashmir Files’ revolves around the sensitive subject matter pertaining to the exodus of Kashmiris Hindus, also known as Kashmiri Pandits, during the 1990s period due to the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. ‘The Kashmir Files’ features veteran actors Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi alongside ‘The Family Man’ actor Darshan Kumar in important roles.

6. Kantara (Streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

The man vs nature centric film has been written and directed by and features actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty. The film is set in the fictional village of Kantara and follows the story of a hot-headed henchman named Shiva (Rishab Shetty). When a forest officer Murali (Kishore) tries to stop the local superstitions in the village and save the forest from the residents, Shiva locks horns with Murali with support from his landlord (Achyuth Kumar).

Helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the star-studded action entertainer ‘Vikram’ features the terrific trio of Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil alongside Suriya in a special cameo. Kamal Haasan has essayed the titular character of a black ops cop named Vikram, who is given the mission to nab a group of masked criminals.

4. Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)

Ayan Mukerji’s massively mounted venture features an ensemble cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna, Mouni Roy, and Shah Rukh Khan (in a wonderful cameo), amongst others. The film’s plot follows the protagonist named Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) who is blessed with incredible superpowers related to fire and how he learns to use them in order to save the world from destruction.

3. Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)

The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name, and chronicles the account of the early days of Arulmozhi Varman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Prakash Raj, amongst others.

Helmed by S.S Rajamouli, the period action movie ‘RRR’ features Ram Charan and Jr.NTR in the lead roles and Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt in pivotal roles. The film is a fictional tale set in the 1920s that revolves around two legendary Indian revolutionaries namely Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (played by Jr. NTR).

1. K.G.F: Chapter 2 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)

It is the second instalment of Prashanth Neel’s 2018 directorial film K.G.F: Chapter 1’. Kannada star Yash reprises his role as the top-notch assassin Rocky who masqueraded as a labourer in the titular Kolar Gold Fields in the first film. The sequel showcases Rocky’s story arc as the new KGF boss and his fight against a formidable adversary and the government. KGF-2 also features Sanjay Dutt as the antagonist Adheera, Raveena Tandon, and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles.
