Where the Crawdads Sing is one of 2022’s surprise box office hits. This American mystery thriller drama film directed by Olivia Newman released at the US theatres on July 15th. Made on a string-tight budget of $24 million, the film made around $136 Million worldwide and emerged a box office success story despite mixed critical reception. Based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing follows an abandoned yet stubborn girl, Kya, who raises herself to adulthood in a North Carolina marshland. She becomes a naturalist in the process. When the town’s hotshot is found dead, she is the prime suspect and then tried for murder. Why is Kya connected to the Murder and how does she prove herself not guilty forms the rest of the story.
Where the Crawdads Sing stars Normal People fame Daisy Edgar-Jones in the lead. The actress received unanimous praise for her performance in the film even in reviews that found the film middling. Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Michael Hyatt, Sterling Macer Jr., Jojo Regina, Garret Dillahunt, Ahna O’Reilly and David Strathairn co-star. Lucy Alibar penned the screenplay and bank-rolled by Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Naeustadter and distributed by Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures.
