Holy Cow! Netflix And Kids’ Education?

Kids ott Platforms netflixGiven the current situation of the world-wide pandemic these are trying times especially for children who have been confined in four walls of their homes. Parents are constantly worried about what children should see and this time Netflix has come to help. Netflixhas a wide range of documentaries and educational shows, perfect for children to kill their time and also learn. They have even created a list of shows available freely on their YouTube channel on the request of teachers. The documentaries and series are available with subtitles in English and other languages. The channel has also provided ratings for each documentary to help teachers and parents make an informed choice.

1) Our Planet

An eight-episode series narrated by Sir David Attenborough explores the amazing nature surrounding us, how it has degraded, the role of humans in it and the consequences of such degradation. The shows provides vast information and facts and is a brilliant way to make children learn. From the remote Arctic wilderness to the African landscapes, South America jungles to Madagascan Savannah, the series explores various habitats around the world. With breath-taking cinematography and state-of-the-art technology this series shows the nature in the most beautiful way possible.

2) Knock Down the House

This political drama features four determined women – including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – and their inspiring story of how they challenged powerful incumbents in the Congress in the USA in 2018.

From a nurse of colour in Missouri who wants inclusion in the society, a grieving mother in Nevada who loses her daughter, a leftist young bartender in New York to a coal miner’s daughter in West Virginia who wants to eliminate pollution, shows how four working class women overcome the adversities in their paths to fight it out with the powerful political machinery.

3) Chasing Coral

Directed by Jeff Orlowski this is a follow-up to Emmy award winner for Outstanding Nature Documentary “Chasing Ice”. This documentary through time lapse photography, top-notch marine biologists, divers, and photographers records visual proof of coral bleaching and the impact of rising temperature on marine organisms.

4) Period. End of the Sentence

This short film produced by Indian film maker Guneet Monga and Iran’s Rayka Zehtabchi is an Oscar winner for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2019. Set in India’s Hapur district, it talks about the taboo of menstruation and attempts to break them by rural women. It also features real life padman Arunachalam Muruganantham who made the machine to produce low-cost sanitary napkins.

5) The White Helmets

This is an Oscar winning documentary based in Syria and Turkey and tells the story of a group of civilian rescue workers who save other civilians by risking their own lives. It is a moving story to see how people out there faced such hardships and yet never gave up on their humanity.

6) Zion

It’s the story of Zion Clark, a young wrestler who was born without legs. He grows up in a foster home and joins a wrestling team and wrestles against his able-bodied peers. This Emmy award winning short film show how zion’s courage and determination made him a renowned wrestler and an inspiration to the world.

7) Explained

The informative series explores an array of socially relevant topics, questions, and ideas. This amazing series will answer many questions like – When does sound become music? Why are women paid less? Does the stock market accurately reflect the status of the economy? How did cricket evolve? Why diets fail? What is k-pop, why is it so popular? What is cryptocurrency? 8) Abstract

This an excellent series where one gets the opportunity to dive into the minds of some of the most innovative designers and have a look at how they establish relations between the design and the philosophy. This series shows how impactful designs are in our lives. Each episode is about iconic creations and the stories and inspirations behind them.

9) Babies

This docu-series revolves around 15 families from across the world and the first year of the life of their babies. The series explores major developments during the first year of a child like social interaction, physical changes in the baby, crawling, rhythm and flow of language, sleeping cycles, skeletal development and much more which makes it very interesting. 10) 13th

This documentary is based on the 13th amendment of the United State’s constitution which reads, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” This Oscar nominated movie has won at the Emmy, the BAFTAs and the NAACP Image Award. The story is about the loopholes in this amendment and its consequences. This documentary is an eye-opener.
