The 2022 superhit Bengali horror-comedy ‘Ballabhpurer Roopkotha’ will be streaming on Hoichoi on the 13th of January. ‘Ballabhpurer Rupkotha’ is adapted from well-known theatre personality Badal Sarkar’s play of the same name. The play has been adapted in Hindi as ‘Ballavpur Ki Roopkatha’ previously.
The film is directed by Anirban Bhattacharya, arguably the best actor of the Bengali film industry. This is his second directorial venture after the Macbeth adaptation ‘Mandaar’, which was praised by critics and audiences.
‘Ballabhpurer Roopkotha’ tells the story of a descendant of a royal family, Bhupati Roy who decides to sell his old ancestral building to pay off his debt. He leaves no stones unturned to impress a potential buyer who is fond of heritage buildings and has no problem with haunted ones too. But confusion starts as a ghost starts frequenting the house.
The film stars Surangana Bandyopadhyay and other not so well-known faces of the industry like Satyam Bhattacharya, Shyamal Chakraborty, Debraj Bhattacharya, Sandip Bhattacharya and Jhulan Bhattacharya and all of them have done a tremendous job.
Every frame looks like a painting, and all credit goes to cinematographer Soumik Haldar and the vision of the director. The film is a perfect blend of comedy, horror and romance. If you are a theater fan and love watching plays, you are going to love this film. It feels like Anirban Bhattacharya has directed a cinema with all the aesthetics and engaging dialogues of a Bengali play of the 60s.
