Disney Plus Hotstar has gone bonkers! What else can explain its decidedly dumb move of releasing one of its buzziest shows in the cumbersome one episode per week form? If you’ve still not guessed what this is about, we’re talking about Disney Plus Hotstar’s latest original show ‘Aakhri Sach’, and the platform’s silly strategy of streaming the series in the irritating one episode per week plan.
Disney Plus Hotstar’s ‘Aakhri Sach’ has been generating a lot of excitement among viewers. Much of the buzz is due to the fact that the makers have twisted the mind-numbing Burari Deaths Case into a compelling murder mystery. Cop Anya (played by Tamannaah Bhatia) investigates the case involving the horrific suicide of eleven members of the same family.
The Burari deaths are a source of lingering intrigue for Indian viewers. The bizarre incident in a Delhi locality, when eleven members of the same family hung themselves to death in the living room of their home was also turned into a documentary series by Netflix. Netflix’s ‘House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths’ was a hit for the platform.
Producer Varun Malik of Nirvikar Films, writer Saurav Dey, and director Robbie Grewal, have a good thing going for them in ‘Aakhri Sach’. The Burari deaths and Tamannaah Bhatia’s lead character are two unbeatable USPs for the series. Add to it the fact that Disney Plus Hotstar is streaming Aakhri Sach in multiple Indian languages of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali, and the series seems like a potential winner.
Enter Disney Plus Hotstar and its silly games, to spoil the viewing experience for audiences. For those who don’t know, Disney Plus Hotstar has released only two short episodes of Aakhri Sach on debut, which was yesterday, 25th August. It will stream one episode per week for the remaining episodes, hoping that viewers will log in to Disney Plus Hotstar week after week, to catch up with the rest of ‘Aakhri Sach’.
But what Disney Plus Hotstar hasn’t reckoned is that OTT viewers are more fickle than ever these days. Out of sight is out of mind for them. Also, they lose interest in old series and move on to newer stuff faster than the cooking time of two-minute noodles. In such a scenario, how much sense does it make to release a buzzy show in weekly installments?
We think, it makes no sense at all.
In fact, Disney Plus Hotstar is effectively killing all the buzz for Aakhri Sach. After this week, viewers tuning in to watch the remaining episodes of Aakhri Sach on Disney Plus Hotstar is bound to fall; and drastically so.
Our readers think so too.
