A few hours ago, the Hilary Duff starring ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (HIMYM) spin-off ‘How I Met Your Father’ was ordered by the American OTT giant, Hulu. This upcoming web series will be a ten-episode TV series and it is expected to be a sequel to the hit sitcom from the mid-2000s. The original series creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will return to this series as executive producers. But how likely is this show to reach the heights of its predecessor?
The original TV series started out great, but with the story dragging on and the protagonist not revealing the mother, the series was expected to die out. But thanks to few brilliant characteristics of the show, HIMYM went on to run for 9 seasons and did very well, despite the “controversial ending”. Despite Josh Radnor’s relatable portrayal of a man searching for love, he was overshadowed by the rest of the cast, even Cobie Smulders’ Robin, after their characters broke up on-screen. But no one was as brilliant as or as memorable as Neil Patrick Harris’s Barney Stinson.
For a spinoff series of a similar concept to thrive, the series will either need to be short or there need to be memorable characters like the ones from HIMYM. In this upcoming Hulu series, Duff’s character Sophie will be telling her son about how she met his father. The story will be set in the year 2021, where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends will be living their lives as they try to find love in the era of dating apps.
Much of the cast has yet to be cast, so we have high hopes of finding a brilliant and memorable character in this upcoming spin-off. There is still some time before production starts, so we hope this series will find the right actors as well for the role of Sophie’s friends. We also hope to see how this new series will tie in with the original HIMYM.
