Netflix India is putting other OTT platforms and their business in danger. Yes, it may sound like giving too much credit to the platform after considering its standing in the Indian market. But it is indeed right.
Let’s make it clear that it is not about big fish eating smaller fish. It is about doing stuff that puts everyone under question. We are talking about the Rana Naidu controversy.
The series as you may already know is a fest of unnecessary nudity and cuss words. Had the script required those elements then it would be fine but forced vulgarity is never appreciated. The overall premise of Rana Naidu becomes something like soft porn and Netflix didn’t even warn users about it.
When a star like Venkatesh is there then people accept clean cinema which is quite the opposite of the case with Rana Naidu.
With the cinematograph act and several other demands to curb OTT, censorship will fall on all other OTT platforms in India.
Even if they are small and less impactful like Hoichoi, Ullu, and many more. Naturally, if a big show like Rana Naidu comes with so many adult scenes then people will also demand censorship on OTT thus eating away at small OTTs.
Netflix India must rethink not only their image but also its responsibility toward the digital entertainment space in India and understand the culture of this country.
