Netflix’s upcoming Mexican film ‘El baile de Los 41’ AKA ‘The Dance of the 41‘ is based on a true incident that happened in Mexico in 1901. The 2020 released film will drop in the second week of May and is expected to turn many heads for its subject matter. Based on a small closed-knit “boys club”; just like any other boys club, they too had a secret to hide from the rest of the world. The trailer for this upcoming drama dropped a week ago. Check it out at the end of this article.
The year was 1901. Men being men, they don’t go straight to home after work – instead many go to a gentlemen’s club where they can relax and drink for a while. And among men of a certain social standing, these clubs and club meetings are more covert and “sinister” in nature. Well, usually that is. The club we are talking about does have a secret but of a different kind. It is a club for men in high society – who also happened to be gay. During an illegal raid conducted by the police on one such night of a meeting, 41 men were arrested with 12 of them dressed in drag. Although their names weren’t disclosed by the media at the time, they still ridiculed the men involved and took immense pleasure in it. However, this was the first time homosexuality was shown in a civilised Mexico and that sparked an LGBTQ movement for years to come.
This upcoming movie talks about the events that lead to this (in)famous incident, which was continued to be ridiculed by modern Mexican media till recent times. The historic event however has been seen in a positive light in recent years and it has helped the LGBTQ movement within the Latin American country.
‘El baile de Los 41’ AKA ‘The Dance of the 41’ will stream on Netflix from May 12th 2021.
