Cameron Bailey, artistic director and co-head at TIFF said that they’ve re-routed the direction the festival takes place but the vision remains the same. This year it will showcase lineup of 50 new feature films, five short films programmes, including interactive talks and Q&A’s with cast and filmmakers. In contrast to last year’s festival which had over 300 films.
Some titles TIFF has announced are:
‘Ammonite’ starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan directed by Francis Lee (United Kingdom); ‘Another Round’ from director Thomas Vinterberg (Denmark); ‘Bruised’ the debut film from director Halle Berry (USA); ‘Concrete Cowboys’ by filmmaker Ricky Staub (USA); ‘Fauna’ from director Nicolás Pereda (Mexico/Canada); ‘Good Joe Bell’ by director Reinaldo Marcus Green (USA); ‘Spring Blossom’ the debut film by director Suzanne Lindon (France); and ‘True Mothers’ by director Naomi Kawase (Japan). More titles will be announced soon.
How the festival will work:
The first five days the premieres will have physical and socially distanced screenings. Audiences can join ‘drive – ins’ and outdoor experiences. The people putting up the festival together are working closely with health officials in Toronto city for safety execution for all.
They are also launching its first digital platform for audiences that cannot travel. Over the course of the festival numerous screenings, discussions, special events will take place there.
As launched in 2019, the tiff tribute awards acknowledging creators of the film industry, it will carry on this year with the awards taking place virtually for many audiences to be a part of it. Additional information on honorees will be given soon.
Tiff will be welcoming ambassadors, 50 celebrated filmmakers and actors who gave strong support in delivering this year’s edition including Ava DuVernay, Darren Aronofsky, Taika Waititi, Anurag Kashyap, Nicole Kidman, Martin Scorsese, Nadine Labaki, Alfonso Cuarón, Tantoo Cardinal, Riz Ahmed, Rian Johnson, Jason Reitman, Isabelle Huppert, Claire Denis, Atom Egoyan, Priyanka Chopra, Viggo Mortensen, Zhang Ziyi, David Oyelowo, Lulu Wang, Rosamund Pike, Sarah Gadon, and Denis Villeneuve, to name some.
